|"Emerald City FC is delighted to send another of our players to the Seattle Sounders Academy. Not only is this a wonderful testament for a youth soccer club but also, it is an incredible achievement for one of our players. The entire Emerald City F.C. family wishes Saku every success as he takes this next step in his soccer career. - Bobby Howe."|
Saku aged 9
Saku has been a proud member of ECFC since he was 9 years old, playing for Coaches Bakken and Hamel. He has truly benefited from ECFC’s excellent player development model and its superb coaching. In May 2011, his second U11 team, led by Coaches Olson and Jessup, captured the WA Cup, and a year later, this team met Saku in Barcelona for a once-in-lifetime international tournament.
After his family’s 2 ½ year sojourn in Europe (during which he learned how the French play le foot), Saku returned to ECFC in Dec. 2013, joining Coach Howe’s U14 team which played in a number of tournaments and showcases along the west coast, in San Diego and Beaverton.
In Barcelona, Saku second from the left.
Thanks to ECFC’s US Club affiliation and its inclusion in the Puget Sound Premier League, Saku joined the Puget Sound Premier League’s M99 Academy team for 2013-14 and 2014-15 as a center defender. This opportunity led to playing time in regional, national and international tournaments, in California, North Carolina, and British Columbia. He was added to the Washington state’s ODP/EDP team roster in September 2014, and this team was a finalist in the US Soccer West Coast regionals in Phoenix this past January.
|Saku is thrilled to have been accepted by the Seattle Sounders Academy team as a defensive player for the remainder of this season and next season, and appreciates the role that Emerald City and its coaches have played in bringing him to his current level of development as a soccer player. He and his entire family is also grateful for the ways in which Emerald City has enhanced them socially, through the camaraderie fostered by the club-- between the players, the club members and its board, the coaching staff, and the family supporters. While Saku’s affiliation with the club is shifting and his family will miss the day-to-day interactions and shared meals and tournament trips with their ECFC soccer family, their support for ECFC’s philosophy is undiminished. Not only this, Saku’s ECFC teammates are among his closest friends, his dad Allen Carter will continue as a member of the ECFC board, and his mother and brother plan to attend future ECFC matches to lend their support. (January 21st, 2015) While most people were gearing up to watch the now fabled ‘Seahawks vs Green Bay’ match up this weekend, there were others who were embarking on a journey of their own no less important in their quest for glory. Emerald City M98 Green along with M97 Green travelled from sunny Washington to a rather wet Portland, OR, for the annual FC Portland Winter Showcase. This presented the U16’s and the U17’s with an opportunity to impress 100+ College coaches and participate in a field of over 200 teams at the upper age groups. Representatives from Washington, Alaska, Idaho, BC, and Oregon’s strongest clubs participated making this an extremely competitive format.
The U16’s showed some excellent composure and touches on the ball and opened up their campaign with a 1-0 victory over the #9 ranked team in OR. They followed this victory with 3 more wins, including a 3-0 victory over the #8 ranked team in Oregon. All in all the M98 Green team finished with a 100% record of 4 games, 4 wins, 9 goals scored and only 2 goals conceded. This earned them the honor of finishing joint top of a field of 22 teams.
Coach Bobby Howe was delighted with his team’s performances:
“The standard of competition at the tournament was excellent. It was both competitive and challenging. Our players had to perform consistently well in order to win their games. The timing of the tournament was ideal: it provided the type of competition we shall expect in the Washington Cup in the next few weeks.”
The U16’s were joined by their U17 counter parts at the tournament and were looking to build upon their recent WSPL Championship Success. The U17’s opened their weekend late on Friday after a long drive down from WA with a comfortable 3-0 victory against the #8 ranked team in Oregon. They followed this victory with 2 more wins, taking care of the #9 & #5 ranked teams in Oregon respectively. They rounded off their excellent weekend with a 2-0 victory on their final day leaving them with a 100% record, 4 games, 4 wins, 8 goals scored and 0 goals conceded and joint top of a field of 33 teams.
Coach David Smith was very pleased with his team’s performances over the course of the weekend:
“The team played some excellent soccer over the course of the weekend against some very competitive opponents. The weather was fairly adverse at times, which made life interesting! But it was great to see the entire squad pull together and come out with 4 good performances without conceding a single goal. The objective of the weekend was to have players observed and evaluated by the attending college coaches, and based off the activity and communications since, it’s been a great success.”
This is the first time in recent history that 2 teams have performed to such levels and is testament to the players, coaches, and support staff / parents for all of their hard work and dedication. Emerald City would like to extend its warmest congratulations to these two teams and its members, as they fly the flag for the club beyond our shores!
