2015 ECFC Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to all the ECFC players for a great season!

(May 3rd, 2015) Our Awards Night, 2014-15 was a great success.  Mac Lyle from our M97Green team came away with the Golden Ball Award, our top honor for any player in the club. Players on all teams were recognized for the contributions in the form of Pivotal Player Awards. The Awards' Ceremony could not not have  moved forward as professionally without the adminstrative excellence of Jon Halfaker and the emcee timing and skill of John Hamel.

Thank you to the players and parents for your participation. What a great night!

Bobby Howe, ECFC Director of Coaching

The 2014-2015 ECFC Awards Celebration was a rousing success.  Well over 200 ECFC players, coaches, and family members filled the Ingraham High School Auditorium to celebrate the accomplishments of this past year's season.  The event was managed by Master of Ceremonies Coach John Hamel, with ECFC BOD President Cris Leffler and ECFC DOC Bobby Howe adding significant highlights from the past year.  In the end, the night belonged to the players and coaches, with 22 Pivotal Players being named, as well as two Silver Boot and Golden Boot MVPs and the return of the Golden Ball awarded to the ECFC player who best captures the essence of what ECFC is about.

Many thanks to the Team Managers and Team Photographers who sent pictures in for the slide show that welcomed guests to the event. And to the M99 players who assisted with setup and cleanup work, as well as the other volunteers who helped in the success of the event.

Emerald City FC player, Saku Carter, to play for Sounders Academy

March 2015

"Emerald City FC is delighted to send another of our players to the Seattle Sounders Academy.  Not only is this a wonderful testament for a youth soccer club but also, it is an incredible achievement for one of our players.  The entire Emerald City F.C. family wishes Saku every success as he takes this next step in his soccer career. - Bobby Howe."

Saku aged 9

Saku has been a proud member of ECFC since he was 9 years old, playing for Coaches Bakken and Hamel.  He has truly benefited from ECFC’s excellent player development model and its superb coaching.  In May 2011, his second U11 team, led by Coaches Olson and Jessup, captured the WA Cup, and a year later, this team met Saku in Barcelona for a once-in-lifetime international tournament.

After his family’s 2 ½ year sojourn in Europe (during which he learned how the French play le foot), Saku returned to ECFC in Dec. 2013, joining Coach Howe’s U14 team which played in a number of tournaments and showcases along the west coast, in San Diego and Beaverton.

In Barcelona, Saku second from the left.

Thanks to ECFC’s US Club affiliation and its inclusion in the Puget Sound Premier League, Saku joined the Puget Sound Premier League’s M99 Academy team for 2013-14 and 2014-15 as a center defender.  This opportunity led to playing time in regional, national and international tournaments, in California, North Carolina, and British Columbia.  He was added to the Washington state’s ODP/EDP team roster in September 2014, and this team was a finalist in the US Soccer West Coast regionals in Phoenix this past January.

Saku is thrilled to have been accepted by the Seattle Sounders Academy team as a defensive player for the remainder of this season and next season, and appreciates the role that Emerald City and its coaches have played in bringing him to his current level of development as a soccer player.  He and his entire family is also grateful for the ways in which Emerald City has enhanced them socially, through the camaraderie fostered by the club-- between the players, the club members and its board, the coaching staff, and the family supporters.  While Saku’s affiliation with the club is shifting and his family will miss the day-to-day interactions and shared meals and tournament trips with their ECFC soccer family, their support for ECFC’s philosophy is undiminished.  Not only this, Saku’s ECFC teammates are among his closest friends, his dad Allen Carter will continue as a member of the ECFC board, and his mother and brother plan to attend  future ECFC matches to lend their support.  GO ECFC!

FC Portland Winter College Showcase, a success for ECFC M98 Green and M97 Green

(January 21st, 2015)  While most people were gearing up to watch the now fabled ‘Seahawks vs Green Bay’ match up this weekend, there were others who were embarking on a journey of their own no less important in their quest for glory. Emerald City M98 Green along with M97 Green travelled from sunny Washington to a rather wet Portland, OR, for the annual FC Portland Winter Showcase. This presented the U16’s and the U17’s with an opportunity to impress 100+ College coaches and participate in a field of over 200 teams at the upper age groups. Representatives from Washington, Alaska, Idaho, BC, and Oregon’s strongest clubs participated making this an extremely competitive format.

The U16’s showed some excellent composure and touches on the ball and opened up their campaign with a 1-0 victory over the #9 ranked team in OR. They followed this victory with 3 more wins, including a 3-0 victory over the #8 ranked team in Oregon. All in all the M98 Green team finished with a 100% record of 4 games, 4 wins, 9 goals scored and only 2 goals conceded. This earned them the honor of finishing joint top of a field of 22 teams.

Coach Bobby Howe was delighted with his team’s performances:

“The standard of competition at the tournament was excellent.  It was both competitive and challenging.  Our players had to perform consistently well in order to win their games. The timing of the tournament was ideal: it provided the type of competition we shall expect in the Washington Cup in the next few weeks.”

The U16’s were joined by their U17 counter parts at the tournament and were looking to build upon their recent WSPL Championship Success. The U17’s opened their weekend late on Friday after a long drive down from WA with a comfortable 3-0 victory against the #8 ranked team in Oregon. They followed this victory with 2 more wins, taking care of the #9 & #5 ranked teams in Oregon respectively. They rounded off their excellent weekend with a 2-0 victory on their final day leaving them with a 100% record, 4 games, 4 wins, 8 goals scored and 0 goals conceded and joint top of a field of 33 teams.

Coach David Smith was very pleased with his team’s performances over the course of the weekend:

“The team played some excellent soccer over the course of the weekend against some very competitive opponents. The weather was fairly adverse at times, which made life interesting! But it was great to see the entire squad pull together and come out with 4 good performances without conceding a single goal. The objective of the weekend was to have players observed and evaluated by the attending college coaches, and based off the activity and communications since, it’s been a great success.”

This is the first time in recent history that 2 teams have performed to such levels and is testament to the players, coaches, and support staff / parents for all of their hard work and dedication. Emerald City would like to extend its warmest congratulations to these two teams and its members, as they fly the flag for the club beyond our shores!

ECFC 15th Annual Turkey Shoot a great success

(December 2nd, 2014) 34 teams with over 150 players braved the cold for ECFC’s 15th Annual Turkey Shoot, held the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Hot chocolate and handwarmers kept the players going as we played almost 100 games.  The players showed great spirit, running, kicking and smiling for a fun day of holiday soccer.  Many thanks to the parents who kept their kids bundled up and warm through the day, as well as the volunteers, coaches, and referees who made the event a success.

ECFC is looking forward to next years Turkey Shoot, and don't forget the ECFC Annual Holiday Indoor Jamboree  coming up on December 22nd!

Congratulations Stuart Johnson, ECFC M97 Green, for being selected by Shattuck St Mary's Soccer Academy

(August 20th, 2014) Emerald City FC would like to congratulate Stuart Johnson for being chosen by Shattuck St Mary's Soccer Academy of Excellence. Stuart, a goalkeeper on ECFC M97 Green, will be joining one of the top USSDA programs in the country and in doing so will continue Emerald City FCs tradition of producing high level players.

As a leader on M97 Green and in the ECFC goalkeeping community, Stuart is a well liked player and will be missed by all his team mates. From ECFC Director of Goalkeeping, Matthew Olson "Stuart has developed a strong passion for soccer, and goalkeeping, during his time with Emerald City FC, so his move to the Shattuck-St. Mary high school residence program in Minnesota is an exciting next step for his development.  He will be immersed in an environment where the student athletes are vigorously challenged in both soccer and academics.  I am confident Stuart will thrive as he is pushed daily to become the best goalkeeper, the best student and more importantly, the best person he can be.

During his time at ECFC, Stuart has been an eager, hard working goalkeeper who relished each competitive drill.  His 'goalkeeper training teammates' will miss his determined and positive personality in trainings.  He has been great to work with and we want to wish him the very best as he goes into his upper class years in high school."

From Coach David Smith "Stuart has been a fantastic member of the M97 Green squad. He has an extremely grounded mentality and couples this with dedication and perseverance to improve his game. He has been a great team mate to his fellow players and we are all excited to see Stuart move on and fulfill his potential. His fun loving personality and sense of humor will be greatly missed!"

Stuart on being selected "... The tryouts were very hard and really intense. I was very impressed with the facilities, coaches and the rigorous training program. I'm really looking forward to this new challenge; it's an amazing opportunity for me  ..." Stuart will be playing with M97 Green alum, Jasper Malamud a midfielder, who joined Shattuck last season.

From Stuart's parents “We have had a phenomenal experience with ECFC from day one. The team (coaches, players and parents) welcomed us and brought us up to speed quickly on the workings of the team. We feel very lucky to have had two years with Bobby Howe as coach of M97G and for the short time with coach David Smith. Stuart learned a lot about the game from his coaches, including GK coach Matthew Olson, and greatly improved his skills. We will miss the people who make ECFC such a great club, and will take with us lots of great memories.” Emerald City FC would also like to thank Stuart's parents for their support of M97 Green and the club.

ECFC player and family giving back to the youth of Colombia

(August 19th, 2014) This past week Michael Lindberg, of ECFC M97 Green, has been in Cartagena, Colombia with his family distributing soccer gear to the young players of the area through the organization Colombianitos

Colombianitos is a nonprofit organization that improves the quality of life of children, youth and their communities through sports, recreation, education and health programs. The Colombianitos work with 4,300 children in six communities throughout Colombia. Their programs motivate children to acquire an education and build strong values and life skills to become healthy, productive individuals while helping to transform vulnerable communities across Colombia.

Michael and his family took soccer balls, shoes, and ECFC jerseys. But during their trip they found an overwelhming need for shoes. The majority of the children do not have shoes to go to school in let alone cleats to play soccer. It is hoped that next year they will be able to take more shoes in addition to shin guards and other soccer gear.

2014 UC Sampdoria ID Camp a great success - Congratulations to the players selected to attend the UC Sampdoria Elite Experience

(July 15th, 2014) On behalf of Emerald City FC, we’d like to thank all the players who participated in the inaugural Sampdoria ID Camp.  We had a great turnout and the Sampdoria coaches were impressed with the level of play and effort all of the players displayed during the week.

The Camp provided our players a wonderful opportunity to experience a curriculum provided by the coaches from UC Sampdoria. Our guest coaches were knowledgeable and provided great encouragement to our players. The response from our players was outstanding.  They were both receptive and attentive on the field, they worked very hard to demonstrate their skills and to improve their play.
This camp relationship was a first for our club.  However, it is our aim to provide a similar camp experience for our players for many years to come.
Many thanks to Bill Walsh, G.I.S. and our guest coaches for creating this special opportunity for our players. Here's to next year.

Bobby Howe

UC Sampdoria ID Camp - Host a Coach

Dear ECFC Families,
As many of you know, our club is hosting the UC Sampdoria camp July 7-9.  Sampdoria is sending two coaches from Genoa, Italy to Seattle for the camp and our club is obligated to provide them accommodations during their stay.   This offers a great opportunity for a family who would be willing to host the 2 coaches during their time here.  The two coaches are:
Deljan Bregasi
-Head Coach for Sampdoria Camps in Genoa
-Played under 20with UC Sampdoria
-Played for the Albanian National Team under 20
Nicolo Baudo
-Coached Sampdoria Academy Team Spring 2014
-Played for UC Sampdoria Reserve Team
-Selected for Italian World Cup under 18
Both speak English well and have been traveling and staying with host families with other partner clubs in the U.S. this summer.  By hosting one or both of the coaches, your family will be able to learn about European soccer while sharing the great hospitality of our Seattle soccer community.  They will need accommodations starting the evening of July 6 through the morning of July 10 when they depart.  They will have a rental car so transportation will be provided.
Additionally, we have an opportunity to share the ECFC spirit the week before the camp. The Sampdoria coaches will actually be in Seattle starting July 1, staying in hotel at the expense of the company that facilitated the Emerald City/Sampdoria partnership (they have a delay between camps and staying here for a week was cheaper than going back and returning from Italy).  As such, we are looking for volunteers to show them around town or provide hospitality July 1-5.  Activities are up to you but could include:
--Take them around town to key tourist sites
--Host them for dinner
--Host them for 4th of July
--Host them or take them to the Atlantic Crossing/George & Dragon/Dray, etc. to watch the Sounders play Vancouver on TV (it’s an away game)
--Take them to the mountains, ferry ride or other day trip.
Showing off Seattle and the surrounding area is always fun, especially to international visitors.  If you are interested in hosting the Sampdoria coaches during their stay July 6-10 or would like to entertain them while they are here at any time between July 1-10, please email Bill Walsh at workmac.walsh@gmail.com or call/text him at 206-399-6025.
Mille grazie!

ECFC Director Of Coaching, Bobby Howe, talks with the Seattle Times

(June 11, 2014) From the Seattle Times ... Bobby Howe has been a fixture Northwest soccer community since he joined the Sounders in 1977 to be a player/coach with the North American Soccer League club.

With the Sounders, he helped the club reach two NASL title matches in 1977 and 1982.

Prior to his move to Seattle, he played professionally in the English First Division from 1966-71 with West Ham United and later two seasons with AFC Bournemouth.

After retiring as a player in 1983, Howe stayed in coaching in England and the U.S., including stints with the USL Portland Timbers as well as the U-17 and U-20 U.S. National Teams.

Receiving the Pivotal Player Award for 2013-2014, M97 Green

(April 28th, 2014) Anyone who knows Johnny Reynolds, knows that he is persistent and dedicated. In addition to his club training, don't be surprised if you see him with some friends and team mates kicking a soccer ball around at the park practicing free kicks and skills or joining in a late night Futsal match at a local community center. He has a dream of playing soccer at the highest level that he can and he's prepared to work hard to get there. Emerald City FC is very proud to have helped Johnny on his journey to reach his goals.  He started with ECFC at U11 and completed his U16 year with M97 Green this past season, which saw him being selected for the Sounders FC Academy '98 team in January 2014.

From ECFC Director of Coaching and ECFC M97 Green coach, Bobby Howe,

"Johnny Reynolds is a very talented soccer player.  He has skill, confidence and creativity.  These qualities have earned him a position on the Sounders Academy.  On behalf of all our members at Emerald City F.C. 2014, Emerald City FC celebrates 35 years in Youth Soccer

(April 7th 2014)
Our Emerald Year…
This year, Emerald City FC celebrates its 35th year and, appropriately enough, the gemstone associated with the 35th anniversary is…the emerald.  So, 2014 is the Our Emerald Year at ECFC and we are committed to making it our best year ever.  The strength of our club is showing in every way: our numbers are growing, our teams are winning, our players are developing, our programs are tremendously successful.

We recently announced a partnership with a Serie A (Italy’s top league) team, UC Sampdoria of Genoa.  This will bring new training opportunities and a new international presence in our city to further enrich the culture of not only our club but the larger soccer community around us.  A new website and new uniforms are also in store for 2014.  Our residence camp returns to Fort Casey August 15-17—a great event (mark your calendars—everyone should plan to attend!).

By every measure, Emerald City FC is a shining example of what can happen when you combine the most talented coaches, the most dedicated parents and the most committed players and focus all of that energy on to a guiding principle of proper player development.  Emerald City FC sets itself apart in many ways, but above all things, we boast the best coaches and best development philosophy in the region—hands down.  Accordingly, as we move forward into 2014, we will continue to embrace a single standard: excellence—in all things.  So, cheers to all and may everyone shine during Our Emerald Year.

DeAndre at 10 years old

(March 8th 2014) ... “I was always on the sidelines of my uncle’s soccer games with Emerald City kicking the ball around and watching the games,” Yedlin says. “He was an older brother/father figure for me.”

His grandmother signed him up for a team as soon as he was old enough.

Semi final penalty shootout winning save by Ryan Farley

(February 24th 2014) "Both the semi-final and final were gutsy wins by the boys.
The semi-final was tied 0-0 with 12 minutes left, when Franklin Pierce Fury got a penalty kick off of an incidental hand ball on the outer edge of the box. They converted it, and with their backs against the wall, ECFC pushed players forward with a sense of urgency and tied the game with 5 minutes left. After missed chances by both teams in overtime, two injuries, and two players who cramped up, the boys went to penalty kicks and made 3 out of 5, with our goalie, Ryan, saving two.

In the final on Sunday, the boys gutted out a 0-0 tie in regulation against the dangerous attack of the Gunners. The boys went back and forth with Issaquah into overtime again, both teams missing opportunities. With solid defending and goalkeeping, the score remained 0-0 and went to penalties. Penalties went into the 6th round, where we, ECFC, made the 4th goal and Ryan made a nice save to win the game. All in all, very gutsy performances where the boys never gave up, dug down deep to win battles when they had to, and did what they needed to come away with the championship."  Coach John Hammels recap of the weekends games.
