- Off To A Great Start in 2017!

November, 2016

Dear ECFC Members:

I am writing today to share an important announcement with you. Bobby Howe has decided to transition to a new role within ECFC as Director of Coaching Emeritus. In his new role he will continue to coach and also provide invaluable mentoring to young coaches. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I express my gratitude to Bobby for his leadership and dedication to ECFC over the past 11 years. Bobby led the club through the transition to US Club soccer and has been instrumental in helping the club thrive in its new environment, all the while continuing to foster and preserve the coaching philosophy and culture that makes ECFC special. Today, our club is in excellent shape, with great thanks to Bobby.

The Board underwent a search for a new Director of Coaching this fall, and I'm pleased to report that we found an outstanding solution. It is with great pleasure that we announce John Hamel as the new Director of Coaching and David Smith as our new Technical Director. These two will begin their new appointments on December 1.

John brings a wealth of experience to the Director of Coaching position and has a long history with ECFC. In his early days with the club, he and Brian Schmetzer thought that young players shouldn't have to choose between having fun and developing successfully as players. He has been visible in the Seattle soccer community for many years, beginning with his time as MVP of the UW Men's Varsity soccer team, years playing professionally in the Seattle area, and coaching boys and girls ages 5 – 18 for over 20 years. He has his US Soccer 'B' License and has been a teacher in the Seattle School District for 23 years. Two of his three sons (CJ and Kerry) are current ECFC coaches! (More about John:

David has extensive coaching experience in England and in the United States, and he has been with ECFC for 8 years. David started his senior coaching career with Hull City FC and Hull University while studying for his undergraduate degree in Sports Science & Biology. Since then David has gone on to work with Manchester United, Sir Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools, the Maltese National Federation among others, before finding his home here in the Pacific Northwest. He currently holds is UEFA 'A' License and USSF 'C' License. He also holds a BSc in Sports Science and an MSc in Exercise Physiology, and is a teacher at Seattle Prep. (More about David:

John and David will continue to coach their current teams for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

The club is lucky to have both John and David, and Bobby's continued engagement as well, to help lead the club going forward. Please join me in thanking Bobby and also congratulating and welcoming John and David into their new roles!
